Job Description

The Assistant Principal (Elementary) assists the School's Head Principal in leading the instructional program and ensures its alignment with division regulations for curriculum design and assessment. Provides and promotes a state-of-the-art curriculum and superior instructional delivery for the success of all students. This position is an Administration, 12‑month position, reporting to the School's Head Principal.

School History

Jefferson‑Houston PreK‑8 School, located in the heart of historic Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, has a rich history rooted in academic excellence, equity, and community. The school traces its origins to two historic Alexandria schools, Jefferson School and Houston School, which were combined to create the current Jefferson‑Houston school community. Today, Jefferson‑Houston is the only PreK‑8 school in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), providing students with a continuous educational experience from early childhood through eighth grade.

Serving approximately 500 students, Jefferson‑Houston is a Title I school and a designated Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school engaged in an ambitious turnaround effort focused on accelerating student achievement through high quality instruction, evidence‑based practices, and continuous school improvement. The school serves a diverse student population and is committed to ensuring every student has access to rigorous, equitable learning opportunities in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

We are seeking an experienced instructional leader with a demonstrated record of success in Title I schools and diverse communities. The ideal Assistant Principal will have expertise in leading school improvement initiatives, building teacher capacity through instructional coaching and professional learning, fostering strong relationships with students, families, and staff, and using data to drive instructional decision‑making. The successful candidate will embrace collaborative leadership, maintain high expectations for all students, and play a critical role in advancing Jefferson‑Houston's turnaround efforts while cultivating a culture of excellence, equity, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
  • Education: A Bachelor’s Degree; a Master’s degree in a related field is required.
  • Certificates & Licenses: A valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching Postgraduate License, with the add‑on endorsement in Administration & Supervision PreK‑12, or eligibility to obtain the appropriate endorsement upon hiring. Please note that the Administration & Supervision endorsement is not a stand‑alone endorsement, and one must already have an established VA License with a subject‑based endorsement before obtaining this endorsement.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of three years of successful experience as a teacher and/or administrator.
    • Experience in elementary curriculum and instruction, including dual language programming, programs for special education (particularly inclusion models), EL programming, and advanced academic services.
    • A performance record that demonstrates high integrity, vision, innovation, enthusiasm and a strong commitment to diverse, multilingual schools.
Essential Functions
  • Selecting, assigning, orienting and evaluating staff.
  • Developing, supervising and evaluating the school's instructional programs, including dual language, specialized instruction, EL services, and advanced academic services.
  • Preparing the school budget and the master schedule in a dual language model.
  • Formulating and implementing professional development activities.
  • Interpreting and enforcing Board policies and regulations as well as school mission and goals.
  • Supervising the use and maintenance of facilities and evaluating custodians.
  • Supervising and coordinating student discipline and welfare.
