The AVID Excel Multilingual/ELL trained teacher develops multilingual students' ability to effectively perform in courses of study in the English language by implementing district-approved curriculum. The AVID Excel Teacher is a high-energy, student-centered educator and advocate dedicated to closing the opportunity gap. This educator will teach the elective class,
implementing the AVID College and Career Readiness Framework to prepare students—particularly those in the "academic middle" still receiving language services—for success in rigorous curriculum and post-secondary life that include planning and preparation for the 3 E’s (1. Enrollment into a 2- or 4-year college/university
2. enlistment into the military or 3. employment post high school through training and acquired certifications).
This job reports to the Principal and is a member of the AVID Site Team as the primary Excel teacher. This is a 10-month, Licensed Teacher position with Francis
C. Hammond Middle School.
Qualifications:
- Education: A Bachelor’s Degree from an Accredited College or University in a Related Field Required, Master's Degree Preferred.
- Certificates & Licenses:
- A Valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching Provisional, Collegiate, or Post Graduate License, with an endorsement in English as a Second Language required, or eligibility to obtain the Teaching License with the appropriate EL endorsement upon hiring.
- Willingness to take part in online and/or face to face AVID educator training, which may include travel
Essential Functions:
- Directly supports the instruction of AVID Excel students, or AVID for long-term multilingual learners.
- Adapts, uses and delivers the targeted AVID Excel curriculum, or Excel Digital planning guides, inclusive of language development through thematic units, college and career readiness preparation experiences, and targeted language domain development in writing, inquiry collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR).
- Administers developmental testing programs, subject-specific assessments, etc. to assess student competency levels and/or develop individual learning plans.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations and students' achievements; develop methods for improvement and/or reinforce classroom goals in the home environment.
- Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals to provide feedback to students, parents and administration as it relates to language development.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, including other AVID teachers, site coordinator, AVID tutors, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources to improve the overall quality of student outcomes and achieve established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
- Serves as an advocate for and with students to improve performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues that all support reducing barriers for access.
- Directs AVID tutors, volunteers and/or student workers to provide an effective inquiry-based study groups, or AVID Scholar Groups, that take place during 40% of weekly classes.
- Serves as part of the AVID Site team to collaborate on monthly events and learning experiences related to college and career, speaker engagements, and workforce learning targeted at engaging students and providing opportunity knowledge.
- Instructs students to improve their success in academic and interpersonal and social emotional learning skills and strategies centered around student agency and success for the next level of learning.
