Position Title: Lead, Accounting

Summary

The Lead Accountant leads monthly accounting closes, financial analysis and reporting, and audit support preparation for the Society of Human Resource Management and its subsidiaries in accordance with GAAP and internal reporting practices, applies principles of accounting to produce accurate and timely financial statements as required by the Boards, Management, and others.

Responsibilities
  • Leads, organizes, and facilitates the overall monthly financial close process in order to produce timely and accurate financial statements, supporting schedules and presentations.
  • Leads process of review, analysis and correction of revenue-generating transactions across all revenue streams.
  • Reviews contracts, grants and other revenue agreements to ensure appropriate revenue recognition rules are applied.
  • Records intercompany activity and elimination journal entries necessary for consolidation.
  • Prepares journal entries for key financial statement line items assigned and ensures proper accompanying documentation.
  • Prepares reconciliations and analyses of balance sheet and income statement accounts as assigned, resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Prepares schedules in support of SHRM's external consolidated financial audit.
  • Prepares and completes special projects and analysis, including documentation of policies and procedures.
  • Completes ad hoc reports and reconciliations upon request.
  • Other duties and projects assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in accounting, preferably nonprofit and multinational organizational structures.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), accounting terminology, accounting procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of 501(c)(6) nonprofit organizations with domestic and international operations.
  • Knowledge of 501(c)(3) nonprofit accounting.
  • Strong understanding of the concepts & principles of ASC 606 Revenue Recognition.
  • Understanding of the concepts & principles of ASU 2018‑08 (Topic 958) for revenue recognition of grants and contributions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external customers to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Net Suite ERP system preferred.
  • Adaptive Planning budgeting system experience preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft (MS) Excel skills required.
  • Experience identifying and implementing process improvements, including call‑out of internal controls.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present financial information verbally and in writing.
  • Self‑disciplined and capable of completing job duties in a timely manner and with a high level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and organization skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
  • Maintain highest level of confidentiality.
Certifications
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
