Network Engineer SME

ALTA IT Services is seeking a highly motivated, self‑directed individual to fill the role of Network Engineer SME for an existing government client. The role is based in Franconia, VA and focuses on ensuring stable operation and efficient performance of data networks.

• Setup and configure Juniper network devices such as MX series routers, SRX firewalls, and QFX switches.
• Design, implement, and maintain robust network infrastructures including LAN, WAN, and VPNs.
• Monitor network traffic and performance; troubleshoot connectivity issues and optimize resources to minimize downtime.
• Implement and manage security measures—firewalls, access controls, intrusion prevention systems.
• Inspect and maintain network cabling and related equipment; replace when necessary.
• Administer hardware and software upgrades for network equipment.
• Create and maintain detailed network documentation: topology, IP schemas, firewall rules.
• Develop policies, procedures, and training plans for network resource administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery.
• Perform network asset management, including inventory and technical specifications documentation.
• Administer and maintain user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
• Recommend, schedule, and perform network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
• Interact with vendors, outsource rs, and contractors to secure network products and services.
• Design, configure, troubleshoot, and expand IP address schemas for WAN/LAN networks.
• Develop functional, systems, and technical requirements documents based on operational and architectural needs.
• Perform technical analysis of IT alternatives in support of strategic modernization efforts.
• Provide expert analysis and advice on feasibility of system designs.
• Perform detailed engineering to optimize enterprise network topologies and develop design documentation for deployment, testing, integration, and support.
• Provide technical support and quality control checks to ensure design specifications meet required standards.
• Diagnose network and communication issues, assist in their resolution, and conduct routine maintenance.
• Perform firmware upgrades, apply patches, and conduct routine maintenance to keep network systems up to date.
• Collaborate with other IT teams—security, system administrators, applications—to ensure integrated network operations.
• Other related duties as assigned.

• Proficiency with Juniper hardware and software: MX routers, EX switches, SRX firewalls.
• Knowledge of Junos OS for network device management.
• Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, and OSPF.
• Experience with security tools: firewalls, IDS, IPS.
• Required certifications:
  Juniper Networks Certified Specialist (JNCIS‑ENT), Juniper Network Certified Internet Expert (JNCIE), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internet Expert (CCIE).
• Strong communication and written skills.

• Degree in computer science or related IT discipline.
• Experience with Juniper network solutions.
