Preoperative Assessment Nurse
The Preoperative Assessment Nurse is responsible for evaluating and preparing patients for surgical procedures to ensure they are optimized for anesthesia and surgery. This role includes conducting comprehensive pre-surgical assessments, reviewing patient history, and communicating findings to the surgical and anesthesia teams. The Preop Assessment Nurse plays a critical role in identifying and mitigating any potential risks, ensuring a safe and efficient surgical experience for patients.
Duties & Responsibilities- Patient Assessment and Screening:
Conduct thorough preoperative assessments, including reviewing medical history, current medications, allergies, and potential risk factors - Patient Education and Preparation:
Educate patients about their upcoming procedures, preoperative instructions, anesthesia, and post-operative expectations. Address any patient or family concerns regarding the procedure - Documentation and Communication:
Accurately document assessment findings, testing results, and patient education in the medical record. Communicate relevant information to the perioperative team to ensure continuity of care - Risk Mitigation and Coordination:
Identify and address any health issues that could impact surgical outcomes, working with the medical team to optimize the patient's condition before surgery
- Minimum of one-year progressive experience as a registered nurse
- Experience in preoperative nursing, surgical, or critical care settings is preferred
- Experience in managing a high volume of phone calls with efficiency and professionalism
- Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or possession of an active multi-state Registered Nurse license
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required upon start
- Strong assessment skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate effectively with patients and medical staff
- Familiarity with current outpatient surgical trends and best practices
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including effective telephone etiquette
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and systems
