DescriptionThe Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) is offering a postdoctoral fellowship.
Why should I apply and what will I be doing?As an ORISE participant, you will join an organization within the DoD that leads research and demonstrations developing innovative, scalable technologies to enhance mission readiness. SERDP and ESTCP fund over 400 active projects addressing natural hazards, site restoration, energy, water, and weapons systems and platforms. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will assess and evaluate active projects, summarize results across projects, and develop strategic paths forward for future research.
You will contribute to consolidating research efforts and developing tools for decision-makers within the DoD. You will gain experience in science communication and policy development, with opportunities to contribute to academic publications.
The SERDP and ESTCP office is located in Alexandria, VA. Relocation is not required. Occasional travel to Alexandria, VA and to scientific meetings may be necessary.
Anticipated Start DateExact start dates will be determined at selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis; the fellowship will be filled as a qualified candidate is identified.
Appointment LengthAppointments are initially for one year with the option to extend up to four additional years, contingent on project needs and funding.
ProvisionsYou will receive a stipend to be determined by SERDP and ESTCP; the anticipated range is $110,000–$120,000 for this 12-month appointment. Stipends are based on academic standing, discipline, experience, and location.

SERDP and ESTCP develop and demonstrate innovative, scalable technologies that enhance military readiness, improve warfighter capabilities, and strengthen defense infrastructure, focusing on cost-effective solutions for operational effectiveness at installations.
About ORISEThis program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. DOE to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Participants are not employees of ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office; you will be affiliated with ORISE for appointment administration. Proof of health insurance is required. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
QualificationsThe qualified candidate will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field. Degree must have been received within 5 years of the application date or be completed by January 31, 2026. Eligible veterans will have earned their Ph.D. within 10 years of application.

Doctoral received within the last 60 months or anticipated by 1/31/2026. Discipline options include Chemistry and Materials Sciences, Engineering, Environmental and Marine Sciences, Life Health and Medical Sciences, among others. Age: 18+. Veteran status may apply for preferences.
