Job Overview

The Alfred University Assistant Head Cross Country & Track & Field Coach assists the head coach with organization and management of the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field programs. Responsibilities include teaching and coaching student-athletes for competitive success, mentoring for academic and personal excellence, meeting recruiting goals, civic engagement, budget and schedule management, fundraising, and developing positive relationships with alumni and parents.

Salary: $62,354 – $64,853 annually

• Maintain an exemplary standard of conduct and professional judgment.
• Provide a nurturing, intellectual, and supportive teaching and learning environment that respects individual differences.
• Assist in development of strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport to best prepare athletes for competition.
• Assist in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of practice and competition plans that are effective for the sport and congruent with team/individual ability.
• Assist in the development and implementation of a team philosophy that supports the educational mission of the university and athletic department.
• Direct student athletes, part‑time assistant coaches, and support staff to conduct themselves in ways that bring credit to the team and Alfred University.

• Implement a recruiting plan consistent with Alfred University’s mission under the direction of the head coach.
• Cultivate a recruiting network.
• Assist in maintaining the department’s recruiting contact management system.
• Recruit student‑athletes that align with the academic profile of Alfred University students.
• Maintain open communication with other Alfred University coaches regarding shared prospects.
• Be knowledgeable about admissions and financial aid processes.
• Assist the head coach in meeting recruiting goals.

• Maintain active membership in professional sport organizations.
• Pursue formal and informal educational opportunities and participate in department professional development seminars.

• Promote sport in area communities.
• Establish and maintain a positive relationship with interested segments of the community (e.g., youth groups, civic organizations, media).

• Comply with institutional and departmental policies.
• Be knowledgeable of and comply with all NCAA and Empire 8 rules and regulations.
• Supervise part‑time assistant coaching staff.
• Work collaboratively with department staff.
• Manage equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
• Work with advancement staff to plan and implement sport fundraising activities.
• Maintain professional coach‑athlete relationships.
• Develop positive relationships with alumni and parents of current and prospective student‑athletes.

• Serve on a departmental operational team (10%).
• If the successful candidate has NSCA‑CSCS certification, the appointment will include coaching strength and conditioning within the athletics department.
• Assist with department initiatives.
• Represent the department on campus committees.
• Support and assist in creating intersections for faculty, staff, and students that will assist in transforming people’s lives.
• Support and assist in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
• Maintain a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff, and students, and expanding access to the AU experience.
• Maintain a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies.
• Participate in required assigned training, including safety training, and comply with safety rules and protocols.
