Duties

Position definition:
The Director of Pre-K - 12 Literacy is responsible for the development, review, and alignment of Pre-K through 12 curriculum and instruction in the areas of Literacy and English Language Arts. The Director of Pre-K - 12 Literacy provides educational guidance, support, coaching, and leadership to administrators and teachers to ensure the District's educational goals are being met. The Director of Pre-K - 12 Literacy will evaluate instructional coaches.

The Director of Pre-K - 12 Literacy will not typically participate in the evaluation of classroom teachers except in unique professional support plans, but may be asked to participate in the evaluation of administrators.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Explicitly models, through communication and actions, the core values and beliefs in the District's goals and mission.

* Provide curriculum leadership for alignment to national, state and District learning standards (where available), for sequencing a developmental, rigorous flow of content in the division, and for ensuring that all department members understand and adhere to the approved curriculum;

* Maintain a current and detailed understanding of all state laws and curriculum requirements, and ensure that the D300 Literacy and English Language Arts programs are in alignment with all applicable laws, regulations, and requirements;

* Use the District's online curriculum management system to maintain and update curriculum documents and instructional unit plans;

* Ensure curriculum and instructional articulation between grade levels;

* Collect and use data to guide instruction and programming within the division;

* Monitor fidelity of implementation of all District supported programs within the division;

* Develop department goals that are tied to the District Strategic Plan; execute action steps to actualize the strategic plan goals.

* In consultation with the Director for Professional Development, prepare a professional development plan for the division and provide accountability and supervision during professional development times;

* In consultation with the Director of Data, Assessment and Accountability, prepare and implement assessment plan for the division to include formative assessments, summative assessments, and district common assessments where applicable;

* In collaboration with the Director for Data, Assessment and Accountability provide district-level and school-level direction for implementation of i-Ready Diagnostic and Instruction;

* Oversee division area use of the district assessment platform, including (but not limited to) support for exam entry, attaching standards and data usage;

* Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of PK-12 Curriculum & Instruction, coordinate instructional materials adoptions and ensure adoption cycle is implemented;

* Oversee physical/digital textbooks and physical/digital instructional materials in division areas;

* Disseminate division information and ensure consistent communication between buildings and grade levels;

* Work with, and provide leadership and support to, ELA department representatives and division heads;

* Evaluate District-based Literacy Coaches and Coordinator of Literacy

* Collaborate and provide support as needed with Literacy Interventionists (Title I and non-Title I)

* Collaborate with Assistant Superintendents, other Directors (Data, Assessment and Accountability;
Innovation and Digital Learning;
Interventions/Academic MTSS;
Professional Development;
Early Childhood;
Math;
Science;
Social Studies, College and Career Readiness; PE/Health/Driver Education; Fine and Performing Arts, etc.) and Coordinators (Social Emotional learning, Student Services, etc.);

* Collaborate with ELL department and ensure tight alignment between all Literacy and ELA programs in the District, including Dual Language, Bilingual, and ELL programs

* Oversee academic extracurricular activities (Spelling Bee, Battle of the Books, etc.);

* Annually update the high school course selection guide and department flowcharts;

* In collaboration with the Director of Data, Assessment and Accountability, ensure NCAA Clearinghouse is updated area each semester for division areas;

* Assist principals (as needed) to recruit and hire new teachers in their divisions;

* Support implementation of Professional Learning Communities in the district and at school sites.

* Model and integrate modern instructional strategies including blended, competency-based and other models.

* Design and deliver professional development in the area of literacy for all job groups including administrators, teachers, para educators, and support staff.

* Provide leadership for enrichment and intervention programs in the area of literacy.

* Be the primary communicator for literacy programs, initiatives, and departmental topics.

* Provide guidance (as needed) to principals on best practices in teacher evaluation (utilizing the Danielson Framework) for the teaching area(s) that fall under this role;
