Position: Construction Inspector I, II- Alice Area Office

Job Description

Construction Inspector I or II – Alice Area Office (2601177). In this role you ensure quality by reviewing and monitoring construction methods and workmanship. You help ensure contractors build roadways, structures, signage, and related systems in full compliance with plans and specifications.

Annual Salary Range:
Construction Inspector I: $45,521 - $71,055
Construction Inspector II: $48,244 - $76,028

Travel:
Yes, 5% of the time

Schedule & Work Hours

Full-time – Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Required to work weekends, holidays, and outside normal hours as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications, including roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports, and related structures.
  • Acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; provides guidance on safety standards and traffic control plans.
  • Conducts construction record‑keeping activities, recommends payments, change orders, and prepares reports.
  • Prepares monthly and final estimates, documents work progress, and documents issues arising throughout project scope.
  • Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites; may serve as the sole inspector or assist on large complex projects.
  • Construction Inspector II Additional Responsibilities
  • Consults with Project Engineers, resident representatives, and contractors’ superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors.
  • Schedules, coordinates, and performs in‑plant structural product inspections and intermediate audits at local or geographically separated locations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Graduate or equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Construction Inspector I:
    No prior experience required.
  • Construction Inspector II
    : 1 year of experience in construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance, and repairs, materials or process inspection, or transportation engineering support; full‑time or prorated part‑time experience acceptable. College education or technical training may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Knowledge of construction engineering policies, procedures, and inspection methods.
  • Understanding of applicable testing methods, industry safety standards, and specification codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps.
  • Proficiency with computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • For Inspectors II:
    Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and ability to perform calculations for material and labor estimates.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Work inside and outside environmental conditions; exposure to moving vehicles, high places, chemicals, and inclement weather.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Walking, moving on foot for long distances between sites.
  • Requires a pre‑employment physical and a drug test; this is a Safety Impact position subject to random testing.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergencies.
