Audio​/Visual Technician

Job Title

The purpose of this position is to provide general audiovisual setup and operational support for the production and broadcast of live events in the Civic Auditorium located in the Allen Public Library.

• Provides technical assistance for live events by identifying and deploying the appropriate audiovisual equipment required for each event; ensuring both City-owned equipment and equipment brought in by performers or rental clients are set up, connected, and operated correctly and safely; and operating various types of equipment such as video cameras, video switcher, lighting, and audio controls during the events. Assists with live-event broadcasting by adding titles, credits, and graphics as needed.
• Provides customer service by interacting with program presenters and performers, rental clients, audience members, and Library staff before, during, and following scheduled events to ensure that program goals and needs are met; ensuring aisles are kept clear for safe ingress and egress; and addressing performer and audience concerns and questions.

Education & Experience:

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
High School diploma or equivalent with one (1) year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency plus one (1) year of combined relevant training and/or experience.

Work Schedule:

The schedule for this position varies based on Civic Auditorium staffing needs and may entail working two to four shifts per month as needed (average four to five hours per shift) including evenings and weekends. Shifts will typically be scheduled at least one month in advance.

Knowledge of:

• Principles and operation of audiovisual equipment and systems.
• Live event production, including audio, lighting, and video operations.
• Safe setup, operation, and troubleshooting of audiovisual equipment.
• Customer service principles and professional communication. At least 50% of work time to interact with coworkers, performers, and audience members.

Skills in:

• Operating audiovisual equipment, including:
• Audio mixers and sound systems
• Lighting consoles and stage lighting
• Video cameras and camera controls
• Video switchers
• Projection and display equipment
• Live streaming and broadcasting software
• Setting up, connecting, and testing AV equipment.
• Ability to read instructions from performers, clients, and City staff, operating manuals, and online resources to enhance skills and operate equipment.
• Identifies, analyzes, and responds to problems and devises solutions during live performances, including changes to audio, lighting, presentation, and staging needs; troubleshoots and corrects equipment anomalies or failures when necessary; and implements actions to ensure audience safety.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:
Medium - Exerting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, negligible amounts constantly, and requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

• Standing to prepare lights and sound for events
• Sitting at the computer for live production including operation of audio, video, and lighting systems
• Traveling to and from the stage to control booth and around the library
• Moving and carrying audio and video equipment around the auditorium stage
• Reaching to maintain and focus theatrical lighting equipment
• Fine dexterity to control the audio and video systems in the auditorium
• Kneeling to plug in and remove audio cables and microphones on the stage
• Crawling across the stage floor arranging audio cables and microphone stands
• Bending to pick up and set down audio/video equipment such as microphone stands and speakers
• Climbing and balancing to adjust lighting instruments on the light trusses
• Vision to operate theatrical lighting and video projection systems
• Hearing to operate audio equipment and audio post-production
• Communication with auditorium guests, artists, and patrons
