Lead Electrical Design Engineer – Critical Power & MV Switchgear Position Overview

A growing engineering and manufacturing organization specializing in critical power equipment, switch gear, and electrical infrastructure is seeking a Lead Electrical Design Engineer to provide technical leadership across complex power system projects. This is a hands-on role for an experienced electrical engineer who can independently develop designs, lead technical activities, work directly with customers, and help take projects from concept through manufacturing.

The Lead Engineer will support applications including data centers, industrial facilities, power generation, healthcare, and other high-reliability environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the electrical design of low- and medium-voltage switch gear, power distribution equipment, and critical power systems
  • Develop and oversee:
    • Single-line diagrams
    • Electrical schematics
    • Switchgear layouts
    • Equipment layouts
    • Wiring documentation
    • Engineering specifications
  • Provide technical leadership across multiple concurrent projects
  • Take ownership of electrical designs from initial requirements through manufacturing and delivery
  • Work directly with customers to understand application requirements and develop appropriate switch gear and power distribution solutions
  • Provide engineering support during proposals and early project development
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing and production teams to ensure switch gear designs are practical, accurate, and manufacturable
  • Review electrical designs for technical accuracy, functionality, and compliance
  • Troubleshoot and resolve design, manufacturing, testing, and field-related electrical issues
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers and provide technical direction
  • Contribute to improving engineering standards, design processes, and overall team efficiency
Required Experience

Candidates should have strong electrical design experience involving power distribution and switch gear, ideally within:

  • Data centers / mission-critical facilities
  • Industrial and manufacturing facilities
  • Airports or transportation infrastructure
  • Utility or other high-reliability electrical applications

Strong knowledge of LV and MV power distribution and switch gear systems is highly preferred.

Technical Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience designing low- and medium-voltage switch gear
  • Strong understanding of electrical power distribution systems
  • Experience developing single-line diagrams, schematics, and equipment layouts
  • Knowledge of electrical protection and coordination
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Solid Works, or comparable design software
  • Familiarity with protective relays; SEL experience is a plus
  • Ability to independently develop electrical designs rather than primarily reviewing or redlining drawings
Leadership & Customer Interaction
  • Ability to lead technical design activities and provide direction to engineers and designers
  • Comfortable working directly with customers and translating requirements into practical electrical designs
  • Strong communication and project coordination skills
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, production, testing, and field service teams
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Self-directed and accountable with a strong sense of technical ownership

This position offers the opportunity to take a lead role in the design of critical power and switch gear solutions supporting large-scale infrastructure projects. You'll have significant influence over designs from the initial concept through manufacturing while working closely with customers and internal teams.

Projects can range from approximately $1M to $200M+, providing exposure to technically challenging applications and substantial opportunities for professional and technical growth.
