Position Purpose and Objectives
The Collection Officer is responsible for assisting members with resolving their loan delinquency and/or other account issues affecting loan repayment. This role requires daily phone calls, processing payments, skip tracing duties, examining delinquent loans, making recommendations for extensions, due date changes, refinancing, and repossessions. The objective is to reduce delinquency and charge‑off loans, leases, and credit cards while providing exceptional member service with each contact made.
MajorDuties and Essential Functions
- Make/receive collection calls on behalf of the credit union regarding past‑due accounts.
- Make suitable payment arrangements with members to bring accounts current in a timely manner.
- Document all conversations and actions accurately in the collections database.
- Skip trace through available sources to locate members.
- Provide assistance to past‑due members when available.
- Willing to work until 7 PM and two Saturdays a month.
- Working knowledge of collection regulations.
- Positive attitude, open‑minded and flexible to manage any situation presented by a member.
- Strong computer and technology skills.
High school diploma, General Education Degree (GED), and one to two years related experience and/or training.
ExperienceMinimum 2 years or more of similar or related experience.

Grasping: use fingers and palm on an object.
Talking: frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Repetitive motions: frequent and regular movements using wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
Average hearing: able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
Average visual abilities: ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products or operate machinery.
Sedentary work: sit, talk, hear, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands or arms. Occasional standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Occasionally lift and move up to 10 pounds.
Working ConditionsNone. No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions.
Mental Activities and RequirementsReasoning ability: use common sense or logic.
Detailed: define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Mathematical ability: basic. Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Language ability: typical. Use passive vocabulary of 7,000‑9,000 words; read at a fast‑paced rate; define unfamiliar words. Write moderate to complex documents. Communicate in complex sentences with normal word order, present and past tenses, and strong vocabulary. Read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
Write speeches and articles. Present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
