Our client is a well-established, privately held professional services organization serving major law firms and corporate clients nationwide. The company is seeking an experienced Controller / CFO to lead its financial operations and serve as a key business partner to the CEO and ownership team.
This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role with responsibility for accounting, financial reporting, P&L management, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, internal controls, and financial strategy.
Key Responsibilities- Own the company's financial operations, including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and P&L management.
- Lead and oversee the month-end close and ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, credit platforms, expense reporting, and working capital.
- Develop financial models, KPIs, and reporting to support executive decision-making.
- Monitor revenue, margins, profitability, expenses, and overall financial performance.
- Oversee billing and collection of client-reimbursable/pass-through expenses.
- Serve as a senior financial point of contact for clients, including resolving billing and invoice questions.
- Partner with the CEO on pricing, commercial decisions, growth opportunities, and financial strategy.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, financial processes, and governance.
- Oversee tax, regulatory, banking, and other external financial relationships.
- Lead, develop, and hold accountable a three-person accounting team.
- Improve financial systems and processes while maintaining a practical, hands-on approach.
- 10+ years of progressive finance and accounting leadership experience.
- Previous CFO, VP Finance, Controller, or Controller-to-CFO experience.
- Demonstrated P&L ownership, including budgeting, forecasting, and margin management.
- Strong experience with cash flow management, banking, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Hands-on experience in a lean accounting/finance environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work directly with executives, ownership, clients, and outside advisors.
- High level of discretion and integrity when handling confidential financial and business information.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA and/or MBA preferred, but not required.
- Professional services, legal services, or another project-based business.
- Experience with pass-through, reimbursable, or project-based billing.
- Experience working in a closely held or founder-led organization.
- Exposure to M&A diligence or corporate development activities.
- Demonstrated stability and longevity in previous finance leadership roles.
The ideal candidate is a low-ego, hands-on financial leader who is equally comfortable working through accounting details and advising the CEO on broader business decisions.
This individual should be comfortable picking up the phone to resolve a client billing question, participating in the monthly close, analyzing financial results, and presenting recommendations to ownership. Strong judgment, discretion, communication, and a high level of personal accountability will be critical to success.
