Summary

of Position

Under City Council appointment, the purpose of the position is to perform the duties of a municipal judge in the McKinney Municipal Court in accordance with the provisions of the City Charter, City ordinances and applicable State and Federal statutes. The position is responsible for judicial work in coordination with the Presiding Municipal Judge, with assigned duties on court dates and when "On Call".

The position is responsible for administering justice in the disposition of cases involving ordinance and statutory misdemeanor violations within the jurisdiction of the Municipal Court.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct bench and jury trials, accept pleas, process appeals, supervise maintenance of official records of proceedings, and perform magistrate duties under State law.
  • Comply with judicial policy and judicial procedures; coordinate with Presiding Judge in the administration of court proceedings.
  • Review dockets, pleadings and trial calendars prior to scheduled court sessions and preside at court sessions and arraignments as scheduled.
  • Accept pleadings, conduct bench and jury trials as necessary, including pretrial hearings.
  • Consider and issue court orders, subpoenas, summons where appropriate; review and issue search warrants and arrest warrants.
  • Conduct hearings and rule on various motions including motions for new trial, continuance, discovery, and suppress ions; hear and rule on petitions for expunction; administer juvenile magistrate warnings.
  • Perform legal research as necessary on matters before the court; study legal periodicals, new laws, and court decisions to maintain current knowledge of judicial developments.
  • Attend planning meetings with Court Administrator, City Manager’s Office, and court staff as needed. Facilitate and coordinate court schedules, magistrate coverage and other meetings with Presiding Judge as necessary.
  • Comply with the City’s Employee Policies and Procedures handbook.
