Job Summary:
The Special Education Center-Based Teacher (SXI) provides instruction, care, and support to students with severe multiple impairments in a center-based program. The teacher designs and implements individualized education programs (IEPs), collaborates with a multidisciplinary team, and creates a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment that promotes communication, independence, and functional life skills.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Plan and deliver individualized instruction aligned with each student's IEP goals.
  • Implement curriculum focused on communication, mobility, daily living skills, and social development.
  • Adapt and modify instructional materials and equipment to meet student needs.
  • Collaborate with paraprofessionals, therapists (OT, PT, Speech), nurses, and other service providers.
  • Collect and maintain accurate data on student progress.
  • Utilize augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems as needed.
  • Assist with personal care routines, including feeding, toileting, positioning, and lifting.
  • Implement positive behavior support strategies.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and needs.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, professional development, and staff collaboration.
  • Performs other functions as assigned
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or related field required.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsement in Cognitive Impairment (SA)
  • Experience working with students with severe multiple impairments preferred.
  • Training in assistive technology, AAC, or medical/behavioral supports preferred.

:
  • Knowledge of special education laws, IEP processes, and instructional strategies for SXI students.
  • Ability to lift, transfer, and physically assist students as needed.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a commitment to student-centered instruction.
  • Ability to supervise and coach classroom support staff.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and move students (up to 50 pounds with assistance/mechanical lift as required).
  • Frequent bending, reaching, pushing wheelchairs, and positioning students.
  • Ability to assist with toileting, feeding, and personal care routines.
  • Capable of standing and actively engaging with students throughout the school day.
Compensation and Details:
  • Pay:
    Starting Per OAEA Master Agreement
  • Schedule:

    Full-time, Full Year Balanced Calendar, 190 days per year
