Role Description

The Building Code Official is a full-time, on-site role located in Greater Philadelphia, based at the Limerick Township office. This role is responsible for administering and enforcing building, construction, and related codes and ordinances, including reviewing plans, issuing permits, and conducting inspections of residential, commercial, and public structures. Day-to-day tasks include evaluating construction documents for code compliance, performing field inspections at different stages of construction, documenting findings, and issuing approvals or corrective notices.

The Building Code Official collaborates with property owners, contractors, design professionals, and other Township departments to provide guidance on code requirements and ensure safe, compliant development. The role also involves maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, attending meetings as needed, and staying current with changes in building codes and regulations.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of building codes, construction standards, zoning, and related regulations, preferably including Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code.
  • Experience with plan review, permit issuance, and field inspections for residential and commercial projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with residents, contractors, design professionals, and public officials.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications, analyze compliance issues, and provide clear, practical guidance.
  • Solid organizational and documentation skills, including accurate recordkeeping, report writing, and use of basic office software.
  • Relevant certifications or licensure as a Building Code Official or equivalent, or eligibility and willingness to obtain required certifications within a defined timeframe.
  • Prior experience in municipal government, code enforcement, construction management, or a closely related field is highly beneficial.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate or bachelor’s degree in construction technology, engineering, architecture, public administration, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Ability to perform on-site inspections, including walking uneven terrain, climbing stairs or ladders, and working in various weather conditions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
