School Counselor (College & Career)

Salary Range: $67,983-$81,690

Qualifications:

  • Educational Specialist I or II Certificate
  • Master's Degree
  • Criminal and child abuse clearances (Acts 34, 114, and 151)

Summary:

Plans, implements, and manages all aspects of the Comprehensive K-12 School Counseling Program for the district at his/her level. Oversees and serves as liaison for social service agency referrals for all staff and students.

    • Has experience in dealing with various socioeconomic family situations.

    • Is knowledgeable in professional field.
  • Prepares accurate, lucid written reports.
    • Makes adequate investigation and obtains desired information.
    • Reports with expediency.
    • Follows through on communications with school personnel.
    • Offers suggestions and recommendations toward resolving problems.
    • Uses plain, lucid language.
    • Reports reflect individually of student and the needs of the case.
  • Organizes time efficiently.
    • Has a sense of priority and needs and responds accordingly.
    • Serves building assignments with proportionate regularity.
    • Maintains appropriate records, reports, studies, etc.
    • Daily schedule reflects ability to reorganize time and priorities.
  • Identifies problems accurately.
    • Uses background information to determine relevance and severity of the problem.
    • Makes valid diagnostic conclusions.
    • Identifies those behaviors that appear problematic but are within normal development.
  • Reports precisely and intelligibly during conferences with parents and/or other professional staff members.
    • Adheres to data.
    • Makes appropriate inferences.
    • Reports comprehensively.
    • Is understood by attending persons.
  • Responds promptly to requests for service.
    • Responds with expediency whenever possible.
    • Accepts referrals with a positive attitude.
    • Obtains desired information and culminates the requested task.
    • Does additional follow-up work if necessary.
    • Is able to establish and communicate priorities.
  • Communicates effectively in case conferences.
    • Covers all aspects of case in organized and concise manner.
    • Is aware of and can deal effectively with emotional reactions of the audience.
    • Adjusts presentation to persons present.
  • Makes realistic recommendations.
    • Has perceptive ability to analyze total situations and recommend adjustments.
    • Isolates and discerns problems.
    • Makes positive suggestions to parents, pupils, and school personnel.
    • Uses School District resources for helping the student.
    • Bases recommendations on diagnosis and within resources.
  • Creates a positive climate for the student.
    • Displays a friendly and humanistic attitude.
    • Interacts in a non-threatening manner.
    • Reinforces appropriate, desirable behaviors.
    • Commends in order to make learning a positive experience.
  • Is perceptive to the needs of children and staff.

    • Responds appropriately to these needs.

    • Respects family's right to confidentiality on information given.
    • Respects school's right to confidentiality of records.
    • Keeps confidence of pupil, parent, or school personnel whenever possible.
  • Recognizes and uses skills of other professional personnel through referrals and conferences.
    • Refers to appropriate school and community personnel.
    • Utilizes input of principal, teacher, school nurse, parent, and other school and outside personnel if appropriate.
    • Uses community resources.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned or delegated by the principal or Director of Community & Student Services.
