THE POSITION
As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator with the Department of Corrections, you will play a key role in keeping critical plant systems operating smoothly. This position allows you to use mechanical skills and problem-solving to maintain the boiler plant and auxiliary equipment at SCI Coal Township. DESCRIPTIONOF WORK
This position helps maintain the safe and efficient operation of the boiler plant and related systems within SCI Coal Township. As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:
- Boiler Operation:
Maintain proper boiler function by reading gauges, performing maintenance, and managing emergency situations - Auxiliary Equipment:
Operate pumps, fans, feeders, and other support equipment to maintain plant performance - Water Testing:
Test boiler water and softening systems and maintain accurate logs of results and supplies - Work Crew Oversight:
Direct inmate workers, monitor movement, control tools, and maintain a secure work area - Plant Housekeeping:
Keep plant areas clean, organized, and stocked during daily operations
- Full-time employment, 40-hour work week
- Work Schedule to be determined shifts include 7:00 AM-3:00 PM, 3:00 PM-10:00 PM, and 11:00 PM-7:00 AM with rotating days off.
- Telework:
You will not have the option to telework in this position. - Salary:
Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $49,010 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement. - This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.

- Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
- You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
