This position supports the safe and efficient operation of boiler plant equipment at SCI Coal Township. It plays an important role in maintaining reliable plant functions and overseeing assigned inmate workers. As a Utility Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:
- Boiler Operations:
Operate and monitor boiler systems in both routine and emergency situations - Equipment Maintenance:
Complete inspections, cleaning tasks, and minor repairs to sustain plant performance - Auxiliary Systems:
Manage pumps, fans, and control systems that support boiler operations - Water Testing:
Conduct chemical tests, track results, and maintain water treatment supplies - Inmate Oversight:
Direct inmate workers, ensure safe movement, and maintain proper tool and supply controls - Documentation Tasks:
Communicate concerns to your supervisor and complete assigned records and reports

Work Schedule and Additional Information:- Full‑time employment, 40 hour work week
- Work Schedule to be determined - Shifts are 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM, 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM, 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM with rotating days off.
- This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
- Telework:
You will not have the option to telework in this position. - Salary:
Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $49,010.00 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement. - You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. - Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
- You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
