THE POSITION

Are you prepared to bring energy and leadership to recreation programs as a Corrections Activities Specialist with the Department of Corrections? This role gives you the chance to motivate inmates through activities that support health, teamwork, and personal growth at the State Correctional Institution (SCI)  will help create a positive environment that encourages learning and active participation. Take part in a mission that values purpose, structure, and meaningful engagement.

DESCRIPTION

OF WORK

This position focuses on coordinating recreational and wellness programs that support growth and constructive activity among inmates at SCI Muncy. You oversee structured and general recreation to encourage participation, skill building, and healthy habits. As a Corrections Activities Specialist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Program Leadership: Plan and conduct structured activities, wellness classes, sports, and inmate organizations
  • Instruction and

    Coaching:

    Provide guidance, training, and direction to individuals and groups
  • Program Evaluation: Assess interests, review participation, and prepare reports on activity outcomes
  • Facility Oversight: Manage equipment, storage, and recreation areas, ensuring proper care and use
  • Volunteer Coordination: Oversee staff and volunteers who assist with programs

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $72,210.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree with major course work in recreation and physical education;
  • or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Other Requirements:

  • You must meet the PA residency requirement. For more information on ways to meet PA residency requirements, follow the link and click on Residency Guidelines.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
