Job Summary
The Marine Scheduler position plays a pivotal role as a member of our supply and trading commercial operations team and is responsible for commercial relationships and objectives related to barge and vessel movements both domestic and international. This position will be responsible for managing the supply operations of a network of refined products terminals across the US by forecasting demand, optimizing supply logistics costs, managing inventory, and ensuring compliance and operating requirements.
The role requires a high degree of analytical ability, a self‑driven and collaborative attitude, and knowledge of import and export requirements. The candidate will work closely with Sunoco’s Trading team, Sales, other Schedulers, and external counter parties. The objective of this role is to deliver well‑developed and cost‑effective supply plans as well as contingency strategies, leveraging industry knowledge and market conditions to ensure our refined products network is supplied in the most efficient manner.
Responsibilities
- Inventory management through the process of demand planning and scheduling shipments for assigned terminals
- Effectively manage and assist others with the overall supply chain and logistics strategy
- Seamlessly resolve product supply issues arising from planned or unplanned events
- Ensure all required import/export documentation is completed, filed and communicated
- Provide accounting accruals for marine expenses/liabilities at month end
- Ensure solutions are consistent with organization’s objectives
- Interface with industry counterparts and negotiate commercial agreements
- Collaborate with trading to ensure adequate purchases/sales of product to meet supply needs
- Optimize the product supply chain to reduce logistics costs by evaluating alternative logistics modes or routes for bulk movements based on changing market conditions
- Ensure that all scheduling processes take place in a correct and timely manner
- Track and evaluate all financial/expense metrics related to marine moves, including freight, demurrage study and cause, and all ancillaries
- Primary point of contact for all vessel related operations (ship, broker, agents, traders)
- Ensure compliance with vessel/barge marine operations, including third‑party interaction, scheduling, Agency appointments, inspection coordination, product quality responsibility, adherence to contracts, local and international rules and authority, US Customs and Port Authority
- Quality assurance (coordinate product testing and approve all marine quality for products)
- Maintain and develop metrics, operations, and financial reports, process documentation and voyage logs
- Consolidate shipping requirements of the various business units and define lowest cost shipping solution using Spot Terms, COA’s and T/C’s
- Provide monthly performance and develop monthly & annual marine budget
- Work directly with the Manager to develop new long‑term business opportunities
Education and/or Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in logistics/business or related field or equivalent work experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience
- Demonstrated ability to work and negotiate in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment
- Availability during international business operations and on call 24/7
- Excellent interpersonal/communication skills (both written and verbal), computer skills, and analytical skills
- Thrives in a cross‑functional team environment
- Strong troubleshooting, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills
- Specialist level requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and 2‑5 years of relevant job‑related experience
- Senior Specialist level requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and 5‑8 years of relevant job‑related experience
- Lead Specialist level requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and 8+ years of relevant job‑related experience
- Exposure to one or more energy markets (crude oil and/or petroleum products)
