Public Safety Dispatcher

The Position

Answer incoming calls for Police, EMS and Fire to keep the public safe. Perform a variety of routine clerical, administrative, and technical work in receiving and dispatching routine and emergency information. Dispatchers are a key component to the safety of our community. They need empathy, compassion, and the ability to keep calm in distressing situations. No experience? Our staff work side‑by‑side with new dispatchers to help them reach their potential.

New hires receive hands‑on training to become APCO certified in Telecommunications and Emergency Medical Dispatch.

Location and Hours

Position located at the Alliance Police Department; shift work on days, nights, and weekends to ensure 24‑hour coverage. Dispatchers typically work 10‑hour shifts.

Position Type and Benefits

This full‑time, benefit‑earning position offers medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, paid vacation leave, sick leave, holiday pay, floating holidays, comp time, and a matching retirement plan. The City also offers supplemental insurance and a Health Savings Account, in which the City contributes up to $1,680 per year to help cover out‑of‑pocket medical expenses. This position is covered by the FOP Contract, which establishes wages, holidays, leave accrual, and shifts.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and monitor telephones, radios, and workstations to accurately maintain communication logs.
  • Receive the public and answer questions in person and on the phone, including during emergencies.
  • Dispatch police and other emergency response personnel.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and handle stressful situations.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent with specialized coursework in general office practices such as typing, filing, accounting, or bookkeeping.
  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Passing typing test score of at least 30 WPM.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Ability to become Certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher within one year and become a Notary Public.
  • Passing background checks in order to access department and state‑wide information systems.
