This is a full-time, hands-on shop role requiring strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and the ability to work safely around heavy components, powered equipment, and industrial cleaning solvents. This position is cross-trained to perform brake relining duties and will assist with relining as production need requires.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities — Brake Assembly (Primary)
  • Assemble brake components — calipers, rotors, pads, drums, and related parts — according to specifications and drawings.
  • Read and follow written instructions, drawings, and schematics with precision.
  • Disassemble, clean, and inspect used brake components, including use of a parts washer to degrease and clean parts prior to inspection or reassembly.
  • Take precision measurements (tape measure, calipers) to verify proper fit and tolerance of components.
  • Select or modify components based on measurements and specifications.
  • Align and assemble parts into complete brake units.
  • Perform functional tests on assembled brake systems to verify proper operation.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues during assembly; repair or replace worn or damaged parts as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of parts used, labor hours, and services performed for production and warranty purposes.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition and store safely when not in use.
  • Follow all safety protocols and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities — Brake Relining (Cross-Trained, Assigned as Production Requires)
  • Inspect brake linings, pads, and shoes for wear, damage, and deterioration using visual inspection and measurement tools.
  • Remove worn linings or pads and install new components, ensuring correct fitment, alignment, and attachment per manufacturer specifications.
  • Ensure all relining work meets internal quality standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of relining work performed, parts used, and labor hours.
  • Collaborate with other technicians and departmental staff to coordinate workflow between assembly and relining.
  • Follow safety procedures, including proper handling of hazardous materials and use of PPE.
Material Handling and Equipment
  • Operates, or is trained to operate, an overhead crane to lift and position large-scale brake components and assemblies. Prior overhead crane experience is preferred; training is provided.
  • May operate an electric pallet jack and/or stand-up (walkie) forklift to move materials within the department. Employer-provided operator training and certification is required before independent operation of any powered industrial truck.
Qualifications

Education & Training

  • Vocational, technical, or trade school training in mechanical, automotive, or industrial maintenance fields is preferred, but not required.
  • Current students or recent graduates of trade/technical programs are encouraged to apply.

Experience

  • Proven experience as an assembler, mechanic, or brake technician is preferred.
  • Prior brake experience is a strong plus.
  • High mechanical aptitude, with demonstrated ability to read and apply drawings and technical manuals.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure and calipers.
  • Good understanding of quality control principles and precision assembly methods.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in a shop environment involving grease, oil, solvents, and metal debris (dirty/greasy conditions).

Tools & Equipment

  • This position requires the employee to supply their own hand tools, including a tape measure and calipers (digital or dial), per the attached Brake Department tool list.

Other Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior overhead crane experience.
  • Prior experience operating an electric pallet jack or stand-up forklift.
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
Working Conditions
