Summary

The Registered Nurse provides direct care to patients using the nursing process. This includes ongoing assessment of patients, providing interventions to treat presenting symptoms, evaluating the effect of nursing interventions and patient responses, and functioning as a team leader/member and resource to others. The RN delegates, oversees, and provides direction to support staff, collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to establish goals and outcomes for each patient, and is responsible for meeting the needs of all types of patients.

Responsibilities
  • Regularly assesses patient needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician-authorized plan of care and accepted evidence‑based nursing practice. (40%)
  • Provides direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as appropriate. (30%)
  • Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care. (20%)
  • The RN is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines as well as hospital‑specific policies and procedures relating to care provided in the medical center. (10%)

  • Interprets information and reports pertinent data to the physician.

  • Manages assignments and performs routine duties on the unit, instructs other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care.

  • Documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way and includes pertinent clinical data.
  • Shares information and reports significant changes or abnormal findings to appropriate team members in a timely manner.

  • Provides a safe and secure environment for patient care.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and professional standards within a specialty.
  • Understands role in emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Sets up and assists with central line and chest tube insertion and care for these tubes according to policy and procedure.
  • Inserts catheter, nasogastric, and feeding tubes per physician order, following proper procedure.
  • Inserts and provides care for IVs.
  • Provides routine care and instruction of spinal catheter and surgical drains following physician order.
  • Provides proper care for drains and their removal.
  • Removes sutures and skin clips, provides routine ostomy care, and irrigates and packs wounds following physician order, procedure, and care plan.
  • Sets up, instructs, and monitors use of PCA.
  • Obtains doppler pulses following proper procedure.
  • Provides routine care of gastrostomy/jejunostomy tubes according to procedure and physician orders.
  • Assists in heparin therapy protocol per procedures.
  • Applies basic traction, splints, braces, and CPM machines following procedure and physician order.
  • Cuts and trims casts, removes wound drains following physician order and procedure.
  • Maintains total hip and total knee precaution measures and instructs patients.
Certifications and Licensure
  • RN:
    Registered Nurse (required)
  • BLS:
    Basic Life Support – certification required within one month of hire or transfer
  • DIMC:
    Dysrhythmia Interpretation Man – competency through testing or class within 12 months of hire
  • PALS:
    Pediatric Advanced Life Support – certification required within 12 months of hire or transfer
  • TEAM Advanced:
    Techniques for Effective Aggression Management – must complete within 6 months of hire or transfer (employees hired on or before 12/31/2023…
