Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse provides direct care to patients using the nursing process. This includes ongoing assessment of the total patient. The RN provides interventions to treat the presenting symptoms and evaluates the effect of nursing interventions and patient's responses. The RN functions as a team leader/member and resource to others. The RN delegates, oversees and provides direction to support staff. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to establish goals and outcomes for each patient.

The RN is responsible for meeting the needs of all types of patients.

Responsibilities include:

• Regularly assessing patient's needs and providing skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based nursing practice.
• Providing direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as appropriate.
• Evaluating the effectiveness of treatment plan and making suggestions or participating in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.
• Being knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines as well as hospital specific policies and procedures relating to care provided in the medical center.

• Demonstrating understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedures.
• Setting up and assisting with central line and chest tube insertion and care for these tubes according to policy and procedure. Inserting cantor tubes, nasogastric tubes, and feeding tubes per physician order, following proper procedure. Inserting and providing care for IV's. Providing routine care and instruction of SP catheters and surgical drains following physician order. Providing proper care for drains and removal of same.
• Removing sutures and skin clips, providing routine ostomy care and irrigating and packing wounds, following physician order, procedure and care plan.
• Doing accurate CVP reading, according to physician order and following proper procedure. Setting up, instructing and monitoring use of PCA.
• Obtaining doppler pulses following proper procedure. Providing routine care of gastrostomy/jejunostomy tubes according to procedure and physician orders. Assisting in heparin therapy protocol per procedures.
• Applying basic traction, splints, braces, and CPM machines following procedure and physician order.
• Cutting and trimming casts, removing wound drains following physician order and procedure.
• Maintaining total hip and total knee precaution measures and instructing patients.
