Position Overview
Level Workforce is looking for a fractional CFO that run the finance function inside our own firm, and step into client engagements as the senior financial voice in the room.
This role is a hands‑on seat, not advisory only. You'll own the numbers, lead and develop a small accounting team, and sit across from construction owners who need someone to explain why a job that looked profitable in March isn't in August. You should know WIP schedules, be comfortable with job cost details, and be able to explain both to a CEO who doesn't read financial statements day‑to‑day.
Success in the first 6–12 months looks like: a clean, predictable monthly close; dashboards leadership actually uses to make decisions; an accounting team with clear ownership and fewer fire drills; and two to three client engagements where you've measurably improved job costing, cash flow, or margin visibility.
A Typical Week Might Include:
- Reviewing WIP and cost-to-complete with a client's PM and controller ahead of a bank reporting deadline.
- Working through cash flow, pricing, and hiring decisions with our CEO for the coming quarter.
- Coaching a staff accountant through a messy month‑end close.
- Diagnosing a new client's job costing setup and scoping what it would take to fix it.
Core Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Advise the CEO: Serve on the leadership team as the trusted financial voice on profitability, growth, pricing, staffing, and investment decisions.
- Own the planning cycle: Lead budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and long‑range planning.
- Make performance visible: Build the dashboards and KPIs that show where the business is actually making and losing money.
Construction Accounting & Financial Operations
- Run the accounting function: Oversee bookkeeping, month‑end and year‑end close, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Own the construction‑specific work: WIP, percentage‑of‑completion, job costing, cost‑to‑complete forecasting, retainage, progress billing, and change orders.
- Protect margin: Analyze project‑level performance and flag margin erosion and cost risk early enough to do something about it.
- Manage cash: Own cash flow forecasting and working capital, including AR, AP, collections, and retainage.
- Lead the team: Set expectations, workflows, and clear ownership across the accounting and finance function.
- Build capacity: Recruit, train, and develop accounting staff as the organization grows.
- Raise the bar: Improve accuracy, reporting discipline, and turnaround time so the team can support both internal and client demands.
- Deliver fractional CFO support: Provide financial leadership and advisory services to Level Workforce clients in construction and related trades.
- Diagnose before prescribing: Run financial and operational assessments that surface real opportunities in job costing, reporting, cash flow, and profitability.
- Fill the gap: Step in as interim or supplemental financial leadership when a client needs it.
- Clean up the mess: Lead financial cleanup, restructuring, and system implementation work.
Systems, Process & Automation
- Improve the plumbing: Strengthen accounting workflows, reporting systems, and financial data visibility.
- Implement well: Support rollout and optimization of accounting platforms, construction management systems, and project‑based reporting tools.
- Use AI practically: Apply automation where it removes manual work and speeds up reporting.
