Position: Preconstruction Estimator I

Position Overview

Duties

And Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of conceptual, rough-order-of-magnitude (ROM), and detailed cost estimates for HVAC, plumbing, piping, ductwork, and mechanical systems from narratives, schematics, design development, or full construction documents.
  • Review contract documents (plans, specifications, addenda, scopes of work) and perform quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, and equipment.
  • Gather and organize supplier/subcontractor pricing and data under supervision to support accurate budgeting and proposals.
  • Support the assembly and formatting of bid proposals, RFP/RFQ responses, and bid packages for submittal.
  • Maintain accurate, organized project files, estimate records, and documentation.
  • Help identify basic design challenges, constructability issues, and value engineering opportunities.
  • Participate in client and stakeholder meetings as needed to gather scope and provide basic estimating support.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (preconstruction, estimating, operations, sales) and external partners to align deliverables with project objectives.
  • Assist with special projects, research, or administrative tasks related to estimating and preconstruction as assigned.
  • Actively learn commercial construction methods, mechanical systems, estimating techniques, and Modigent standards through on-the-job training and mentorship.
Supervisory Responsibilities

None (entry-to-junior support role focused on learning and assisting senior estimators/preconstruction staff).

Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience:

    1–3+ years of relevant experience in construction estimating, preconstruction, project coordination, or a related field (internships, apprenticeships, or entry-level roles in mechanical/construction count). Recent graduates with engineering or construction management degrees who have strong interest in commercial HVAC/mechanical estimating are encouraged to apply.
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Physical Demands:
    Primarily office-based with occasional site visits; ability to walk construction sites, lift light materials (plans, laptop), and travel regionally as needed; standard office mobility for computer work and meetings.
  • Work Environment/Safety:
    Professional office and occasional active construction sites; exposure to varying weather, noise, dust, heights; must adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots) on sites—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position.
