Thrive Education Partners is seeking an experienced ISEE preparation tutor to work with a 5th-grade student preparing for the Lower Level ISEE (for 6th-grade independent school entry) in Houston, TX. This is specialized test-prep work—the Lower Level ISEE is a demanding 2+ hour exam that requires not just content knowledge but strong pacing strategy, test endurance, and the ability to help a younger student manage time pressure and fatigue while performing at their best.
Great Lower Level ISEE preparation is about more than drilling content. It means understanding the test's unique structure and timing—particularly the compressed Verbal Reasoning section (34 questions in 20 minutes)—and building both the academic skills and the mental stamina a 5th grader needs to sustain focus and strategy throughout the entire exam. The ideal tutor knows how to teach pacing explicitly, use timed practice to build endurance, identify where the student can gain the most points, and help them approach test day with both competence and confidence.
You'll work with an engaged family that's serious about preparation. Your role is to assess where the student currently stands, design a focused preparation plan that addresses both content gaps and test strategy, monitor progress through practice tests, and adjust your approach based on what the data shows. The goal is to help this student walk into the Lower Level ISEE feeling prepared, capable, and ready to do their best.
WhatYou'll Do
- Assess the student's current performance using available practice tests, diagnostic results, and observation to identify starting point and preparation priorities across Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics Achievement.
- Develop a targeted, individualized preparation plan based on the student's strengths, skill gaps, and the testing timeline.
- Provide focused instruction in vocabulary development, reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, and quantitative problem-solving at the upper-elementary level.
- Explicitly teach pacing strategies tailored to the Lower Level ISEE, with particular attention to the Verbal Reasoning section (34 questions in 20 minutes) and time management across all sections.
- Build test stamina and endurance through timed practice sections, full practice tests, and discussion of how to maintain focus and strategy over the course of a 2+ hour exam.
- Teach age-appropriate test-taking strategies, including process of elimination, question analysis, educated guessing, and how to manage pressure and fatigue.
- Use practice test results to identify specific skill gaps, determine instructional priorities, and measure progress over time.
- Adjust instruction when a strategy isn't working or when new gaps emerge from practice data.
- Help the student build confidence, reduce test anxiety, and develop a sense of agency in their preparation.
- Communicate regularly with the family about progress, preparation focus areas, and readiness as the testing date approaches.
At Thrive, effective Lower Level ISEE preparation recognizes that this test is not just an academic assessment—it's a test of endurance, pacing, and strategy under time pressure. Preparation means more than content review; it means understanding the specific structure and timing that makes the Lower Level ISEE challenging, explicitly teaching how to manage that timing, and building the mental stamina a younger student needs to sustain performance throughout.
We're looking for a tutor who can make Lower Level ISEE preparation focused and purposeful. You'll identify what the student can actually improve most quickly, teach pacing that actually works under pressure, use practice tests to guide your instruction, and help…
