Position: Sr Data Scientist I (Hybrid)

About the Role

Senior Data Scientist I to join the Insurance Analytics team, bringing a strong foundation in actuarial science, statistical modeling, and data science. The role involves developing innovative insurance products, advanced predictive models, and data‑driven insights that inform key business decisions. You will partner closely with Product and Vertical teams to design and deliver analytical solutions for complex insurance challenges and evolving market needs.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and enhance statistical and machine learning models using structured and unstructured data to generate predictive insights and attributes.
  • Design and build data pipelines and analytical solutions that support risk segmentation and insurance use cases.
  • Provide actuarial expertise and recommendations to inform model development, risk segmentation, and rate filings.
  • Research and apply innovative data science methodologies to solve complex business problems.
  • Manage and analyze large, complex datasets, including data storage, processing, and quality assurance.
  • Apply best practices for data validation, testing, and model performance monitoring.
  • Collaborate with team members to share knowledge and strengthen analytical capabilities.
  • Identify and leverage new data sources to improve and validate existing models.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to understand business needs, troubleshoot challenges, and deliver actionable insights.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of team tools, technologies, and evolving industry trends.
  • Apply business and domain knowledge to drive effective, practical solutions.
  • Communicate progress, insights, and outcomes clearly to stakeholders.
  • Support team excellence by upholding high standards of quality, accountability, and execution.
Requirements
  • Minimum undergraduate degree in a relevant field with 4+ years of relevant work experience, OR a master’s degree with 2+ years, OR a PhD with relevant experience.
  • Strong expertise in Python; coding skills in R, SQL, and ECL are a plus.
  • Good foundation in actuarial science and experience applying actuarial principles to pricing, risk segmentation, or model development.
  • Strong foundation in statistical and mathematical modeling, including model assumptions, diagnostics, and interpretability.
  • Extensive programming skills in Python and/or R, with experience using pandas, scikit‑learn, Num Py, XGBoost, PyTorch (Python) and rpart, party, caret (R).
  • Ability to learn new technologies (e.g., Pyspark, Azure/AWS ML Services) and share cross‑functional knowledge.
  • Self‑starter with strong initiative, ownership, and accountability.
Technical & Professional Experience
  • Build or test new processes with senior guidance.
  • Domain expert in Data Science, Actuarial Science and/or Statistical Analysis to build advanced models and roll them into production.
  • Scope and execute analytical approaches for moderately complex problems, seeking input when needed.
  • Support, maintain, and enhance existing models (e.g., GLM and tree‑based methods).
  • Apply statistical, mathematical, predictive modeling and analytical techniques to large, complex datasets.
Domain/Industry Skills
  • Apply core data science and statistical methods within an insurance context.
  • Understand and apply machine learning techniques, including hypothesis testing, sampling methods, model development, validation, and data pipelines.
