Under general direction of the Public Works Supervisor, leads, trains, oversees, and participates in the more complex and difficult work of a crew engaged in traffic operations, the maintenance, repair, and construction of public works projects and related facilities; sets priorities and directs the work of assigned staff on a project or day-to-day basis; skillfully operates heavy equipment; performs a variety of technical tasks;
and provides technical and specialized assistance to the Public Works Supervisor.
This is a non-exempt.

- Leads and participates in the work of a crew engaged in traffic operations, the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, signs, sewers, storm drains, and related structures; carpentry work, including the construction, installation, remodeling, and repair of cabinets, partitions, walls, windows, doors, roofs, foundations, and other carpentry work; performs the most skilled or complex duties.
- Operates and troubleshoots equipment problems.
- Operates a variety of construction and maintenance equipment, light and heavy trucks, and power tools.
- Secures worksites from traffic hazards as necessary.
- Monitors work in progress at the work site; provides technical assistance to crews and directs corrections and modification as appropriate.
- Trains and instructs new and less experienced employees in proper work methods, tools, equipment, and safety precautions.
- Ensures safety of work sites by utilizing appropriate safety methods, equipment and devices, including traffic control.
- Installs signs and stripping, pavement legends and pavement markings.
- Estimates materials needed and secures tools and equipment required for assigned jobs.
- Marks out underground services; leads and participates in the removal of graffiti from City property.
- Maintains inventory of parts and supplies, calibrates gas detectors; cleans and maintains shop, tools, and equipment.
- Discusses work to be performed with supervisors, and assists in planning, organizing and assigning work to designated crew.
- Provides input on employee evaluations.
- Responds to emergency situations in off-hours as required; may be required to work overtime and off-hour shifts as needed.
- Keeps work related records using a computer.
- Operates City trucks and tractors with attachments skillfully and safely.
- Responds to questions or complaints from the public.
- Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Stormwater Maintenance
- Performs and oversees the most complex maintenance, repair, and installation work on City stormwater/drainage systems, concrete and open channels, creeks, pipes, drains, detention basins, and drop inlets.
- Assists in coordinating, overseeing, and personally participating in all assigned maintenance programs, including watershed protection, vegetation management, weed abatement, dry weather monitoring and concrete repair.
- Performs and oversees the most complex maintenance, repair, and installation work on City streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, roadway base and sub-base, guardrails, asphalt pavement, crack seal application, concrete repair, traffic and street sign installation, repair, and reflectivity and pavement markings.
- Assists in coordinating, overseeing, and personally participating in all assigned maintenance programs, including concrete, asphalt, crack seal, sign retro-reflectivity, utility trench, and City-wide inspections and street saver programs; and/or watershed protection, vegetation management, weed abatement, dry weather monitoring and concrete repair.
- Installs, repairs, replaces, and/or maintains vehicle detectors and controllers, relays, timers, and related traffic control equipment.
- Installs conduit, underground field, aerial, and other wiring systems; rewires signals, loop detectors, control devices, and electronic equipment and devices.
- Installs, repairs, replaces, and/or maintains street signs; replaces faded, illegible, missing or outdated signs; lays out and applies or removes pavement markings and channeling devices, including crosswalks, stop bars and skip lines, per established standards.
