Position: HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

UNCLASSIFIED POSITION IN THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Three years of experience in construction, repair, and/or maintenance of public infrastructure, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Specific License or Certification Required

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Class B Commercial Driver's License; some assignments may require a Georgia Class A Commercial Driver's License and/or special endorsements. Must obtain and maintain Flagging Certification within the time frames established by the department.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

Demonstrate proficiency in operating track and large rubber‑tired equipment and perform essential functions while complying with county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures.

Examination

The examination evaluates education and experience. An official, accredited college transcript may be required if selected.

Essential Functions
  • Maneuvers heavy equipment and operates complex mechanisms involving digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, to support construction and maintenance of county roads, grounds, utilities, rights‑of‑way, and other infrastructure.
  • Operates excavator, track hoe, and backhoe for skilled digging and trenching, maintaining exact tolerances to avoid damage to public utility lines.
  • Operates track or rubber‑tired loader for loading materials, controlling scoop for optimum delivery.
  • Operates motor‑grader, scraper, and excavator with blade attachment to set gradients for large construction projects, adjusting blades for height, angle, and pitch.
  • Operates bulldozer, scraper, and compactor to move earth, gravel, sand for construction and landfill operations.
  • Inspects and prepares equipment, performs light maintenance (oil, refueling, lubricants), cleans vehicles and equipment after use.
  • Transports, loads, and unloads materials and equipment for projects.
  • Performs manual labor: lifts, moves, loads, digs ditches, shovels, rakes, compacts, levels materials, runs errands.
  • Follows safety procedures, wears protective gear, monitors traffic, flags traffic, places markers, reports incidents.
  • Receives, prepares, or completes documentation: work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, diagrams, maps, manuals.
  • Communicates with supervisors, employees, departments, and the public via telephone, radio, and messages.
Additional Functions
  • Operates equipment and trucks at lower job family level.
  • Provides coverage during special events, emergency/disaster situations, and assists other employees or departments.
