Position Title
School Counselor
Qualifications- M.A. Degree
- At least three years of teaching experience preferred.
The School Counselor is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and maintaining guidance and counseling programs and services designed to provide information and direct counseling services to students, their parents, and teachers. The goal is to facilitate academic, social, and career growth and adjustment of each student. Some duties apply only to secondary‑level counselors.
Performance Responsibilities Student Assistance- Assist in the effective placement of students.
- Assist with the registration process and scheduling when appropriate.
- Facilitate parent support and education efforts as needed.
- Provide students with information and assistance to gain understanding and insight into their growth and adjustment problems.
- Provide orientation for new students transitioning between educational levels.
- Provide information to students and staff about available guidance and counseling services.
- Assist with credit recovery and online services when applicable.
- Assist with gifted and talented programs in developing the Academic Learning Plans (ALPs).
- Provide continuous evaluation of the guidance and counseling programs and services.
- Identify and pursue significant personal growth activities following a systematic plan.
- Inform the community about school programs, acting as the primary contact between the school and student home/parents.
- Maintain appropriate records and submit required reports on time.
- Assist in interpreting standardized test results with students, parents, and staff.
- Implement the school guidance program using effective instructional skills and carefully planned group sessions.
- Ensure counselors adhere to a professional dress code.
- Interpret cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests.
- Assist students in maintaining high attendance.
- Provide counseling to students who are tardy or absent.
- Provide counseling regarding appropriate school dress.
- Provide teachers with suggestions for effective classroom management related to specific students.
- Help the principal identify and resolve student issues, needs, and problems.
- Advocate for students at IEP meetings, student study teams, and attendance review boards (truancy).
- Coordinate assessment activities and support student post‑secondary education through scholarship applications.
- Monitor attendance and organize attendance meetings with administration, students, and parents.
- Direct, coordinate, and facilitate the referral process for RTI (Response to Intervention).
- Under the direction of the Administrator, plan and implement family support interventions through IEP staffing or DHS referrals.
- Assist school personnel in identifying students who need special help and facilitate referral assistance if needed.
- Provide teachers with information on new instructional methods and trends for working with traditional and non‑traditional learners.
- Assist students with short‑term support and guidance and refer to mental health professionals when appropriate.
- Assist in testing services and in supplementary testing and interpretation for specialized needs.
- Collaborate with post‑secondary schools when applicable.
- Facilitate the admission and scholarship process for post‑secondary education.
- Provide career information to help students develop career plans and choices.
- Supervise the maintenance of cumulative records and ensure accurate documentation for graduation requirements.
