Overview
The Pasadena Fire Department - Fire Prevention Division is seeking a dedicated and motivated individual with a strong work ethic to join our team. The Fire Inspector Trainee Program is to cooperate with and assist Pasadena Fire Inspectors and Operations Personnel conduct fire and life safety inspections while providing an opportunity for the Fire Inspector Trainee to gain experience in Fire Prevention, Fire Administration, and Fire Prevention Training.
The Fire Inspector Trainee Program consists of entry-level fire inspector candidates who have successfully completed college-level courses in Fire Technology and California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector courses and seek practical application of the classroom training received.

Responsibilities- Assists staff with miscellaneous inspections (i.e., sprinkler systems, fire alarms and special extinguishing systems).
- Receives training in alternate methods and materials when it is appropriate to do so; follows up for compliance with codes when violations or deficiencies were noted during inspection.
- Prepares correspondence, memos, inspection records and technical reports; maintains reports and records.
- Learns applicable fire code sections and proper storage requirements of hazardous materials.
- Performs technical fire safety inspections of industrial, commercial, and residential properties to determine compliance with state and local fire and building codes.
- Assists staff with plan check duties as required; communicates with consultants, city and/or county staff, architects, and contractors on requirements for projects. Assists with issuing fire code permits.
- Assists with public presentations on fire safety and fire prevention topics; presents programs to civic groups and participates in the Fire Department and district wide public relations programs; assists in training city employees in fire prevention and protection techniques.
- Assists with the inspection or investigation of citizen complaints about potential fire hazards.
- Assists in evaluating fire hazards and performing inspections of overgrown vegetation.
- Shadows inspection staff while meeting with citizen groups, organizations, contractors, architects, engineers, and developers regarding fire protection systems, access requirements, building requirements, and other fire prevention life safety issues.

- Completion of California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D.
- Completion of Hazardous Material First Responder Awareness.
The selection process will consist of any combination of application evaluation, written exam, oral panel interview, department interview and may be required to complete a brief soft-skills assessment during the selection process. - Must possess a valid Class C California Driver's License at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
- Completion of California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D at time of appointment.
- Weekend and evening assignments may be required.
- SLIDING CLASSIFICATION This is a sliding class classification which may be promoted to Fire Inspector classification based on performance and when all of the requirements are met.
