Role

Purpose

Trained to incorporate their unique personal experience in their own recovery with a knowledge base in human services and addiction, the Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) will engage with individuals identified with Opioid Use Disorders or other Substance Use Disorders in both the hospital's inpatient and outpatient departments. The PRS will be trained to utilize Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) with the goal of decreasing mortality rates and increasing linkage to treatment for those living with addiction.

This position is part of a two year grant funded by SAMHSA and administered through the State of Illinois. This position requires a valid driver's license in order to drive BJC vehicles.

Responsibilities
  • Provide SBIRT to patients identified with Opioid Use Disorders and Substance Use Disorders throughout the hospital. Build therapeutic alliances with each patient utilizing motivational interviewing techniques and working collaboratively with the medical staff, patient and family. Serve as a role model for individuals seeking recovery. Help individuals identify options and participate in all decisions related to his/her recovery goals.
  • Utilizing a harm reduction model of care, the PRS will work with each patient in developing an individualized treatment plan which includes but is not limited to the induction of buprenorphine, ensuring its availability to patients until each patient is linked to a MAT provider and ensuring each patient is discharged with naloxone.
  • Link patients to treatment and ensure a smooth transition to the next level of care. Follow-up to ensure that each patient attended his/her initial appointment to treatment. Following discharge from the hospital, contact the patients regularly to provide support, address barriers to treatment and facilitate further linkage to community organizations.
  • Serve as an active member of the treatment team and will document service provision in the patient's medical record. Provide addiction education to medical staff. Build relationships with both medical providers and community organizations to improve overall patient outcomes.
  • Participate in data reporting to the state of Illinois.
