The RFNA is a preoperative registered nurse with advanced training in surgical first assisting. This role involves assisting surgeons during procedures, providing preoperative and postoperative care, ensuring optimal patient outcomes. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, clinical expertise, and the ability to function effectively in a fast paced surgical environment.

Overview

Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital offers highly specialized surgical and medical services in an intimate environment and is known for outstanding patient care. With 64 private patient rooms, 14 operating rooms and four intensive care unit rooms, the facility was designed to provide a comforting environment that is innovative, efficient and centered on the patient experience. The campus features a park-like setting with landscaping and a walking path that winds through the grounds and connects to Millennium Park.

The Perioperative Services staff provide excellent Surgical Care by partnering with an extraordinary team of physicians and health care professionals. They are able to offer the comforts of a small community hospital combined with the resources of the world‑renowned BJC Health Care System and Washington University Medical School. Our highly educated and dedicated staff continually strive to improve the health of the people and communities they serve.

Role

Purpose

Performs an expanded perioperative role as a first assistant to surgeons during surgical procedures in the operating room. An RNFA works alongside the surgeon to provide direct patient care and collaborates with the perioperative team and other health care providers to plan care.

Responsibilities
  • Delivers intraoperative patient care as the first assistant to the surgeon(s) as a collaborative team member; pre‑operatively performs a focused nursing assessment and analyzes the data to determine nursing diagnosis.
  • Functions as a member of the surgical team and contributes to the overall efficiency of the peri‑operative department, considering safety, effectiveness, efficiency, and cost factors in planning, delivering, and evaluating patient care.
  • Monitors patients' responses, modifies the plan of care accordingly, administers medications as per standard nursing practice, and implements and coordinates the peri‑operative plan of care.
  • Participates in professional development and lifelong learning, seeks out and participates in learning opportunities, evaluates practice against current professional standards, and contributes to the professional growth of peers.
  • Integrates knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum, includes patient and family education, incorporates research findings into practice, and advocates for perioperative health safety.
