Externship Overview
Students will gain hands‑on clinical experience and understand day‑to‑day operations of an NVA hospital, working closely with Associate Veterinarians to gather patient histories, perform physical exams, create treatment plans, conduct diagnostics, provide dentistry services, observe/assist or perform surgical procedures, and manage the medical care of patients. Additionally, externs will practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations range from 2 to 8 weeks, depending on hospital and student schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate.
Eligibility & StipendStudents in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. The stipend amount at Great Rivers Animal Hospital is $1,500. For more information on stipend amounts and details, refer to the NVA stipend program.
