- Collaborate with product managers and marketing teams to understand customer requirements and translate them into product specifications.
- Design and develop product concepts using CAD software, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, and aesthetic appeal.
- Create detailed engineering drawings and specifications for manufacturing processes, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Conduct feasibility studies and cost analysis to evaluate the viability of new product designs.
- Prototype new products and conduct rigorous testing to validate design performance and durability.
- Work closely with manufacturing teams to address any design-related issues during production and implement necessary modifications.
- Participate in design reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers to enhance product quality and innovation.
- Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to incorporate best practices into product design.
- Document design processes and maintain accurate records to facilitate future reference and compliance audits.
- Assist in the development of user manuals and technical documentation for new products.
- Collaborate with suppliers to source materials and components that meet design specifications and quality standards.
- Support marketing efforts by providing technical insights and participating in product launches and promotional activities.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in product design or development, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in CAD software such as Solid Works, AutoCAD, or similar tools for 3D modeling and design.
- Strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes, including injection molding, machining, and assembly techniques.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail and a passion for innovation.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey complex technical information clearly.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and design for manufacturability (DFM) principles.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to product safety and quality.
- Experience with user-centered design principles and methodologies.
- Familiarity with rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing.
- Previous experience in the consumer goods or outdoor products industry.
- Understanding of sustainability practices in product design and development.
- Certification in Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing methodologies.
- CAD software (Solid Works, AutoCAD)
- Prototyping tools and techniques (3D printing, CNC machining)
- Project management software (Asana, Trello, or similar)
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Communication tools (Slack, Microsoft Teams)
- This position is based in Altoona, Iowa, and may require occasional travel for supplier visits or trade shows.
