About the Opportunity

This is an open position with Penelec, a subsidiary of First Energy Corp. This posting is for two (2) Trouble man Shifts, based out of the Altoona, PA location. These positions will work Wednesday - Saturday, 4:00PM - 2:00AM.

Responsibilities:
  • Engages in any work of construction, maintenance and repair of transmission and distribution lines.
  • Demonstrates a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
  • Installing and removing poles, installing and changing insulator assemblies, stringing, splicing and tying in conductors.
  • Performing various operations such as transferring circuit loads by making cuts and taps.
  • Making cutovers from old poles and equipment to new or temporary installations.
  • Locating faults on open or grounded street light circuits.
  • Demonstrates sound internal and external customer service.
  • Inspecting poles, lines and co-worker's equipment.
  • Assisting with the directing and training of less experienced employees
Qualifications:
  • Journeyman Lineworker with at least 5 years of hands-on experience with electric utility or a utility lines construction contractor.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Works safely following safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to safely operate motor vehicles.
  • Skills in pole climbing in distribution and transmission, installing and removing poles, towers, structures, installing and changing transformers.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and operation of transmission and distribution systems.
  • Advanced knowledge in elements of applied electricity including AC and DC circuits.
  • Questioning attitude to learn, produce results and develop relationships.
  • Understanding the practices and procedures for clearing and grounding lines and the equipment for the protection of the public, personnel and property.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical and dielectric characteristics and properties of the materials used in making cables and cable joints.
  • Understanding the practices, principles of operation and the proper application of equipment as prescribed by the company for safety, first aid and rescue.
  • Basic understanding of National Electric Code and NESC.
  • Ability to interpret complex prints and specifications.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all seasons.
  • Prepare legible and accurate reports using paper documents and mobile computer.
  • Valid CDL Operator's License, Class A, for the state of Pennsylvania.
  • Reside within a 45-minute travel time of the service center location.
  • Successfully pass written and hands on tests and submit to our pre-employment physical and substance screenings.
  • Pass a background investigation, which will include a driver's abstract from Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles.
