Job Overview

The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is hiring a full‑time Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support) (GS‑0081‑07) for the 97th Civil Engineer Squadron at Altus AFB, Springfield, OK. This role involves airfield and structural firefighting, crash‑rescue operations, and the operation of complex firefighting vehicles. It includes non‑invasive emergency medical procedures. The position offers special retirement pay, federal benefits, and overtime*.

• Perform Basic Life Support and emergency medical care.
• Drive and operate firefighting vehicles, including pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles.
• Conduct crash‑rescue and firefighting duties in high‑risk air traffic or support operations.
• Perform structural firefighting on a variety of facilities such as multistoried buildings, industrial areas, and base storage facilities.
• Maintain firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.
• Comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations and enhance workplace safety.
• Operate communication equipment and maintain effective verbal and written communication.
• Lift and carry heavy loads as required.

• U.S. citizenship required.
• Must hold or obtain within 24 months the following certifications: ACI Firefighter II (including Firefighter I), HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, Apparatus Driver Operator – Pumper, ART, MWS, and NREMT‑B.
• Knowledge of hydraulic principles related to firefighting vehicles and water systems.
• Knowledge of airfield and structural firefighting equipment, procedures, and operations.
• Knowledge of building design, aircraft cockpit design, and hazardous materials handling.
• Knowledge of safety requirements from applicable standards, regulations, and technical orders.
• Ability to apply Basic Life Support techniques and protocols.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
• Physical fitness to complete a mandatory program and to work under harsh environmental conditions, including respiratory protection and hearing conservation requirements.
• Valid driver’s license (type appropriate for assigned vehicles).
• Ability to sustain color vision, contrast, and depth perception as necessary for equipment operation.
• Ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance and to comply with mandatory drug testing (TDP).
• Prepared to work a 144‑biweekly rotational schedule (48 on/72 off, 48 on/72 off, 48 on/48 off) with weekends, holidays, and possible recall.
