PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

Facilitate students with disabilities achievement in the curriculum area; the teacher is responsible for contributing to the educational system as a whole and to the growth of each student; the teacher shall assist each student in developing skills, acquiring knowledge and achieving maximum potential.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate, with required endorsements for subject/level assigned
  • Hold a Texas teaching certification in Deaf and Severely Hard of Hearing OR Hearing Impaired OR Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: EC-12

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Knowledge of assigned curriculum; knowledge of instructional methods
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn and use behavior management intervention techniques
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee process, and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal-setting process and implementation
  • Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
  • Lesson planning and presentation skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Classroom management skills
  • Strong planning, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Communicate in oral and written form in English

WORK CONDITIONS

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.

Posture: Frequent standing and walking; bending/stooping and reaching fully above head, pushing, pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; reaching

Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist non-ambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; attend after school and nighttime activities occasionally; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards; occasional district wide and statewide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to respond to needs in a timely manner in a high-stress environment

Regular Attendance is an essential function

Minimum Experience: At least one year of student teaching or approved internship

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
  • Participate in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional media.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formative and summative assessments and provide progress reports as required.
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal.
  • Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
