PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements special education and general education endorsements for assignments
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Knowledge of assigned curriculum; knowledge of instructional methods
Ability to instruction students and manage their behavior
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
Lesson planning and presentation skills
Conflict resolution skills
Classroom management skills
Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
Technology skills as related to classroom presentation and record keeping
Work Conditions
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture: Frequent standing and walking; bending/stooping and reaching fully above head, pushing, pulling, and twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; reaching
Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist non-ambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; attend after school and night time activities occasionally; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards; occasional district wide and statewide travel
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to respond to needs in a timely manner in a high stress environment
Regular Attendance is an essential function
Minimum Experience:
University/college required student teaching or approved internship
