Deaf Education Assistant

Job Title

Work under the direction of the teacher of the deaf to enable students to learn communication skills and help them to grow mentally, physically and emotionally.

Minimum

Education/Certification:

• Two years of study at an institution of higher learning OR
• An associates (or higher) degree OR
• Meet the rigorous standard of quality required by the district

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

• Strong communication, public relations, organizational and interpersonal skills
• Effective verbal and written communications skills
• Ability to follow written and/or oral directions, interpret policy and exercise good judgement
• Work effectively and harmoniously with students, parents and school personnel
• Ability to instruct small groups
• Ability to use the communication system that is required for the student(s)

Work Conditions:

• Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office/educational equipment including personal computer, tablets, Smart Board, etc.
• Posture: Prolonged sitting, standing and walking; bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
• Motion: Prolonged walking, repetitive hand motions
• Lifting: Lifting and carrying (less than 60 pounds)
• Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases), work with frequent interruptions in a variety of educational settings and maintain professional demeanor under stress
• Travel: Some in district travel
• Regular attendance is an essential function.

Minimum Experience:

Experience working with students and parents- preferred. This experience may be working in church-related schools, day camps, youth groups, private schools, licensed day-care centers or similar experiences.
