Special Education Classroom Aide

Assist teacher in preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements. Works under the supervision of a certified teacher.

Qualifications:

• Education/Certification:
  
  High school diploma or GED
• Ability to obtain a Texas educational aide certificate and Para Skills Certificate through Stedi.org
• Special Knowledge/
  
  Skills:
  
  Ability to work well with children
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Experience:
  
  Some experience working with children preferred

  Maintain emotional control under stress
• Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing
• Ability to move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment

Major

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Instructional Support:
  Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays. Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment. Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
• Student Management:
  Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups. Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty. Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
• Other:
  Participate in staff development training to improve job performance. Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned. Assist in toileting needs, including providing diaper changing for Special Education students.
