Engineering Assistant I or II (2600113)

This position will perform engineering tasks across design, construction, inspection, maintenance, surveying, and transportation operations. It includes job rotation, training, and continuing education aimed at pursuing professional engineering licensure.

Recruitment Bonus

Engineering Assistant I – B20: $51,158 – $81,351
Engineering Assistant II – B21: $54,278 – $87,046

Essential Duties for Engineering Assistant I
  • Actively prepare for professional engineering licensing through training and exams, and maintain required documentation.
  • Apply engineering principles to transportation‐related activities.
  • Assist during emergencies and inclement weather.
  • Assist in survey activities and collect engineering data at project sites.
  • Participate in career development with job rotation and continuing education.
  • Perform engineering calculations, drafting, and design work.
  • Prepare and check plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E).
  • Prepare drawings and exhibits for public involvement.
  • Review construction plans from consultants.
  • Use design software and computer‐assisted design/engineering systems.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties for Engineering Assistant II
  • Perform advanced and specialized design work.
  • Assist in training less experienced engineering assistants and technicians.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Acceptable Substitutions

Master’s or Doctoral degree in engineering may substitute for a Bachelor’s degree.

Experience
  • Engineering Assistant I: No work experience required.
  • Engineering Assistant II: 1 year of engineering‑related experience (full‑time or equivalent part‑time).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Additional certification required for Engineering Assistant II.
Preferred Qualifications

Has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

Competencies for Engineering Assistant I
  • Knowledge of transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals.
  • Understanding of plans, specifications, and estimate preparation.
  • Use of computer-aided drafting and design systems.
  • Plan review methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Application of engineering fundamentals and calculations using algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Ability to maintain safe and effective working relationships with others.
Competencies for Engineering Assistant II
  • Knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Understanding of highway construction and maintenance.
  • Advanced and specialized design/drafting skills.
  • Design review experience.
  • Ability to perform calculations for material and labor estimates, technical survey data, and engineering calculations.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must work indoors and outdoors in various environmental conditions.
  • Hazard exposure: moving vehicles, mechanical parts, heights, heat, chemicals.
  • Required protective gear includes respirator, hard hat, or other.
  • Light work: lift up to 20 lbs frequently; lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Movement: walking, standing, crouching on varied surfaces.
  • Physically demanding; pre‑employment physical required.
  • Must pass a drug test before employment; subject to random testing.
  • Medical marijuana is not a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test.
