TxDOT’s Amarillo District is looking for a Transportation Engineering Spec I to work in our Traffic Design Department. We offer competitive pay, great benefits, and work-life balance.

Minimum Salary: $45,521.00 – Maximum Salary: $71,055.00. Pay Basis:
Yearly. FLSA Status:
Nonexempt.

Work Location:

Amarillo District Headquarters, 5715 Canyon Dr, Amarillo, TX 79110. Travel:
Yes, 25% of the time. Shift: Day job, 40 hours per week, onsite.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
  • Assists in planning and coordinating office operations.
  • Assists in writing general notes, specifications and provisions.
  • Performs advanced and specialized design work.
  • Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
  • Performs traffic engineering design work, analyzes traffic and accident data and recommends solutions for traffic problems.
  • Prepares field notes.
  • Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right‑of‑way maps.
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience: 6 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.)
  • Licenses and

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Competencies:
    • Extensive knowledge of advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures.
    • Considerable knowledge of applicable engineering workstations and applications, higher mathematics, computer software applications and hardware, interactive graphic and design information systems.
    • Some knowledge of design and plan preparation methods and requirements, computer‑aided drafting and design systems, advanced and specialized design/drafting, maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
    • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals; maintains a safe and effective working relationship with others.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Balance on varied surfaces without falling.
  • Stooping, bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
  • Standing for prolonged periods.
  • Talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Repetitive motion—substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • This job is physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety‑impact positions. Random drug testing applies.
