* * SUMMARY
* * Under the supervision of the Building Official, the Chief Building Inspector operates as the team leader for the Building Inspectors and is responsible for supervising, training, mentoring and coordinating the workflow of the team. This position is also responsible for completing annual performance evaluations for each team member. The Chief Building Inspector may also perform a variety of duties to include Manufactured Home and Travel Trailer Park licensing inspections, Work Without Permit inspections and assisting Building Inspectors as needed to complete their daily inspections.
Responsible for ensuring complaints are resolved. Creates and maintains relationships with personnel, other city departments, citizens and contractors. The Chief Building Inspector plays a lead role in the Code Cycle Update process.
** ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
*** Supports the mission of the Department by promoting, managing and informing staff, citizens and others of the Department mission.
* Supervises the building inspectors, assists in fulfilling their duties and supervises other staff as needed. Performs annual evaluations for the Building Inspectors.
* Monitors the progress of permitted projects for coordination and quality control of document review and inspection services by making on-site inspections of projects.
* Assist in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and procedures for the Department.
* Investigate, interpret and issue zoning violation notices as necessary. May be required to file suits, prepare cases, and testify in Court.
* Supports the Building Official with training and mentoring of Department personnel.
* Responds to inquiries and provides information to builders, engineers, contractors, architects and the public concerning submittal requirements, code and permit regulations. Interpret codes, city ordinances for staff and public.
* Reviews construction documents and field inspections for compliance with City Ordinances. Must be able to research property and inspection history.
* Perform various field inspections for compliance with City Ordinances as needed.
* Collaborate with the other inspectors, departments, and agencies as required ensuring compliance with codes.
* Provides recommendations and/or options to the Assistant Building Official for code interpretations.
* Coordinates with inspection and plan review staff to ensure consistency in the application of code requirements and established turn-around times.
* Research and prepares various reports.
* Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
** SUPERVISORY/MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
** Responsible for supervising the Building Inspectors. Supports the Building Official in managing the day-to-day field operation of the department and being able to make decisions in his/her absence.
** WORK ENVIRONMENT:
*** Primarily a field position with some time spent in an office environment. Regular hours 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Subject to after hours and weekend activities.
* Must be able to withstand rigors of motivating in and around construction sites through all weather conditions and maintain acute sensory perceptions of surrounding environment to perform inspections.
* Frequent public contact, group discussions, public meetings, written and telephone communications.
* Requires extended periods of time reading plans, maps, specifications, codes, reference books and other written documentation.
* Must be able to ascend or descend ladders or changes in elevations.
* Must drive to and from numerous different sites throughout the city to perform inspections.
* Must be able to physically pick up and carry files and paper plans (30 lbs.).
