Position: TECH - OR/SURG FIRST ASSIST

POSITION SUMMARY: A person having extensive knowledge, experience, proficiency and/or certifications in comprehensive, technical surgical skills that provides technical leadership in the care of the perioperative patient. Working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, attends to the patients direct care needs. Acts as a primary preceptor for Surgical Technology Students, Techs, and Sr. Techs in developing needed direct care skills and performs tasks as delegated by the RN.

Works in partnership with a RN and although this individual does not assume an independent assignment, can be relied upon to demonstrate excellence in the direct care of the most complex perioperative patients. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives in collaboration with other health team members. Supports an organizational culture for Service Excellence and practices the Service Excellence Standards to all customer groups.

Job Duties /Responsibilities
  • Assists the RN in all cases inclusive of the most complex patients with the implementation of an age appropriate plan of care through tasks delegated by the RN
  • Demonstrates an expert level of technical skills in care delivery and performing tasks delegated by the RN based on patients’ condition.
  • Demonstrates both knowledge and technical expertise regarding sterile processing, procedures, equipment, supplies, instruments, and surgical sequence for all procedures applicable to this Lead Tech - OR/Surgical level
  • Demonstrates the ability to pass instruments and second scrub on all procedures applicable to ability in meeting Lead Tech competencies
  • Demonstrates willingness to learn and then educate others on new procedures, equipment, and techniques. Is able to translate knowledge into teaching others
  • Demonstrates ability to use prior knowledge in adapting to and learning new procedures
  • Assists the RN and other Surgical Technologists to provide an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors and employees

Qualifications

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS

REQUIRED:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certification as a Surgical First Assist
  • Was employed to practice surgical technology in a healthcare facility before September 1, 9 or is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that service
  • BLS from the American Heart Association (or obtained during orientation) and maintain certification throughout employment. This must be obtained prior to providing patient care
  • Completion of a surgical technologist program with certification exam eligibility - certification, preferred
  • One year surgical technology experience, preferred
