The primary purpose of this position is to perform Utility System Repairs for the medical center. This position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Section of Engineering Service at the Amarillo VA Health Care System, Amarillo, Texas. Recruitment/Relocation Incentive may be authorized for a highly qualified candidate.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. A specific length of training and experience is not required; however, applicants must demonstrate sufficient scope and quality of training or experience. Evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions on the resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards and evaluated against prescribed qualifications.

• Major duties include operating, maintaining, and repairing high pressure boilers, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, and an ice plant, along with associated equipment.
• Boiler Plant operations: check control panels, monitor fire alarm system, medical gas alarm panel, elevator emergency call systems, and temperature/humidity checkpoints.
• Repacks and replaces pumps, valves, greasing oil pumps, and control linkages.
• Maintains proper chemistry control of boiler feed water and condensate return.
• Maintains air conditioning plan and all peripheral equipment including air handling units, fan coil units, pumps, piping.
• Maintains heating and ventilation units, exhaust fans, and all similar equipment involved in the control room.
• Carries out adjustments and repairs or replacement of components of the central air conditioning system.
• Responsible for maintenance and repair of closed systems for chilled water and air conditioning for units such as Operating Room and Intensive Care.
• Checks operation of EMCS and checkpoint systems.
• Maintains accurate logs of conditions and events and turns over items requiring attention.
• Work Schedule:
  
  rotating shifts – 7:00 am–7:00 pm, 7:00 pm–7:00 am, 7:00 am–3:00 pm, 3:00 pm–11:00 pm.
• Physical requirements:
  
  frequent work in confined areas, moderate to strenuous effort, long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, crouching; lifting up to 40 lb unassisted and occasionally >40 lb with assistance.
• Working conditions:
  
  indoors with occasional outdoor work; exposure to high temperatures, noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, fumes, cuts, abrasions, burns from acids, caustics, hot water, steam, contact with boilers; work on catwalks and ladders.
