Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff. The RN maintains standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, external governing and credentialing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards. The RN assesses the patient using the nursing process to formulate an individualized plan of care, implements interventions, and evaluates outcomes consistent with policy and appropriate to the client’s condition, promoting, maintaining, restoring physical and mental health, and preventing illness.

The RN interprets age/disability specific information relevant to the client population served. The RN provides for the safe delivery of medication in accordance with policies, procedures, physicians orders and/or current practice. The RN reports and documents the patient’s symptoms, responses, and progress thoroughly and accurately. The RN pursues professional development, continuing education, and licensure maintenance. All duties comply with Joint Commission, Federal and State regulations, Oceans  Mission, policies and procedures, and Performance Improvement Standards.

Essential

Functions
  • Utilizes the nursing process: assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation to develop an individualized plan of care and treatment modalities.
  • Identifies risk levels, precautions, and expected outcomes individualized to the client, including discharge planning; prescribes interventions to attain outcomes; evaluates effectiveness of interventions; conducts ongoing assessment from admission to discharge; initiates medical/psychiatric crisis intervention as needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric disorders and appropriate nursing interventions; applies plan of care to progress the patient toward wellness.
  • Administers medications as prescribed safely; provides education on prescribed medications; recognizes signs of adverse drug reactions.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and responsibility for decision making and quality nursing care.
  • Reviews, revises, and updates medical records within facility guidelines; transcribes and implements physician orders; documents care and progress concisely.
  • Communicates incomplete assignments and current client needs to staff to assure continuity of care.
  • Implements staff assignments and delegation of duties; supports staff and patients; advocates for patient needs and safety.
  • Utilizes nursing knowledge to meet the needs of the facility, patient population, and staff; promotes evidence-based practice.
  • Float among clinical services and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Educational / Experience Requirements:

  • Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment at Oceans Healthcare hospital.
  • Valid Compact licenses are also acceptable where applicable.
  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing is required.
  • One year of inpatient hospital experience strongly preferred.

Qualifications / Skills Requirements:

  • Ability to adapt to a high-stress environment and assess potential for patient escalation.
  • Effective communication, organization, and sensitivity to culturally diverse populations and special needs (e.g., Chronically Mentally Ill, Geriatric).
  • Critical thinking abilities and continuous improvement mindset for patient care.
  • Self-confidence and ability to lead and direct others.
  • Must successfully complete CPR certification and Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.
Work Environment

Subject to interruptions and high pace. 12-hour rotating shifts. May be high-paced and stressful; ability to cope mentally and physically. Possible exposure to disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior. Work is primarily indoors with protection from weather conditions, though temperature changes may be experienced.
