Job Overview

TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division is seeking one Equipment Mechanic I, II or III to maintain and repair a wide range of wheeled vehicles, including passenger vehicles, medium- and heavy‑duty trucks, and construction equipment. The role supports daily operations and responds to emergency events across the state.

Responsibilities
  • Perform repair/maintenance and inspection on fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
  • Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Complete repair order paperwork and enter data into the fleet information management system.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Check lighting and wiring for proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment.
  • Perform quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by checking safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems to perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities for Equipment Mechanic II
  • Train less experienced technicians.
Additional Responsibilities for Equipment Mechanic III
  • Lead and train less experienced technicians.
  • Perform duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.
Travel

Travel to other shops throughout the state as required; 25% of time.

Qualifications
  • Experience:

    2, 4, or 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair, depending on level.
  • Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Certificates from a Technical Training Institute may substitute 1 year of experience for 1 year.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license and Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 120 calendar days of course registration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Diesel or Automotive Technology Associate’s Degree or technical certifications.
  • ASE Certifications.
  • Experience with diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Experience working on heavy or construction equipment.
Physical Requirements
  • Work in extreme cold and heat; below 32°F and/or above 100°F for more than one hour.
  • Noise exposure.
  • Wearing protective gear including respirator, hard hat, etc.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs, carry up to 25 lbs, kneel, bend knees.
  • In job simulation and pre‑employment physical as part of interview.
  • Must pass drug test; drug testing per regulations.
  • Ability to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification and be on 24‑hour emergency duty.
  • Required to work alternate schedules during emergency situations and travel to other districts.
